I have been a Governor at Warter for seven years; four years as a Parent Governor and three years as a Local Authority Governor and Chair. I have additional Governor experience, having served as a Parent Governor at a local secondary school for four years.

My two children both attended Warter school and I can attest that they had the best start to their education that any parent could ever wish for. I began to appreciate how good our school was when I volunteered as a parent helper when my eldest son was in year 1. Seeing first hand how hard all the staff worked on behalf of our children inspired me to join the Friends of Warter team and then the Governing Body so I could feel I was doing ‘my little bit’ to help. Even though my children have since moved on, I still feel very passionate about the school. I remain fully committed to working as part of the Governing Body to ensure all our children continue to be given the opportunity to develop into confident, happy, young learners in a safe and stimulating environment.

I so enjoyed my voluntary work in school that I recently took the decision to re-train as a teacher and am now teaching at another local primary school. Prior to my career change, I had over 20 years business management experience gained from working in large blue chip organisations and from running my own business. This experience has equipped me with a range of skills which I have drawn upon to help me fulfil my role as a Governor.

In my spare time (of which there is not a lot nowadays!), I enjoy teaching martial arts and personal safety skills to children and young people at a local martial arts club.

Last year, I became a designated NLG (National Leader of Governance), which means I support and work alongside the Chairs of other schools to develop their Governing Bodies. My work in this role provides me with opportunities to see what is happening in other schools and to share best practice with my fellow Governors. I am very proud of our school and feel privileged to be part of such a dedicated and committed school community.

I joined at Warter School in approximately 2004 as a person to listen to children read. I applied for the position as governor as I had some spare time in my working week. I run a small finance company and a small property company based in Pocklington.

I attend every Wednesday to listen to readers and help the children with their maths if the need arises.

I help to run the credit union to encourage the children to learn to save their money.

I support classes Kestrel and Merlin in their duties and help out when the school visits outside events if I am available.

I find the weekly visit a very pleasant window in my week, being with very well behaved children and very pleasant adults.

I have lived in Nunburnholme for the last 13 years, I have also been the treasurer for St James PCC since March 2013 and ring bells at the church.

Most of my working life, has been spent as an administrator but I also worked in Germany for an 18 month period as a Driving Instructor teaching forces personnel and their families to drive. This role developed my one to one communication skills and my ability to adapt to unusual situations, always useful in a primary school environment!

Having left my last job, I decided to volunteer at my son Ewan’s school, Warter CE Primary, and enjoyed the experience so much that I undertook an STLS level 2 course. I took the opportunity that my redundancy had offered and changed to a more fulfilling career with new challenges working as a teaching assistant at the school.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, teaching martial arts at a local martial arts club and lots of outdoor activities including skiing.

When our PCC were asked to nominate a Foundation Governor this year, they suggested that my experience, my knowledge of and links with the school and my position within the parish made me a good candidate. I was pleased to accept and hope that I will do a good job and provide an effective link between the Church and the school.

I have been a teacher at Warter School since 2008 and have worked with classes of children in both key stages. I volunteered for the governing body as I care very much about the school; its children, staff and community. Also, as an experienced full time teacher at the school, I can provide valuable links between the governing body and its influence on the day to day realities of running the school.

Outside of school I keep a busy life. I enjoy walks with our pug, Ruby, and keep fit by playing regular 5-a-side football and attending spinning classes at the gym. I am an avid musician and have played in a band since my school days. I also love to read when I can, especially on summer holiday mornings with a hot cup of coffee!
